This external UV sterilizer can be used in aquariums and garden ponds. It improves biological water quality by eliminating floating algae, bacteria and pathogens. The UV unit is secured inside a light proof frame and it does not harm beneficial nitrobacteria or aquarium inhabitants.

This is an external UV unit and it cannot be submerged in water. In order to use this UV sterilizer it has to be connected to a water pump or external aquarium filter. Water can be flown through the unit although UV sterilization is turned off.

Outlet (hose connector) size is the external diameter, which fits to a hose with same or slightly smaller inner diameter. For example, 21mm outlet fits a standard ¾ garden hose with 19mm inner diameter. UV sterilizer can be fitted to smaller diameter hoses (used in most aquarium canister filters) with separate hose adapters.

Replaceable UV bulb is a standard PL-type fluorescent (UVC) tube, all standard tubes fit. Rubber fasteners are standard type O-rings.

UVC filters are used in aquariums and garden ponds as a permanent water purification accessory or as a temporary aid for green or white water problems. Green water is caused by free floating algae, while white water is caused by free floating bacteria. Although neither of them is usually harmful to aquarium inhabitants, they are most annoying for the aquarium or garden pond owner.

UV-filter sterilizes water with UVC-radiation. UVC-radiation eliminates all biological material that gets exposed to it. UV filter or UV sterilizer designed for aquarium or garden pond will destroy all free floating algae, bacteria, viruses etc. that is pumped trough the filter unit, but it has no effect on algae or bacteria attached on the surfaces in the aquarium or pond. Hence, UV filtration does not harm the beneficial nitrobacteria.

Suitable UV sterilizer power depends on the water volume and the time in which the water is to be sterilized. If UV sterilization is applied continuously as a preventive action, UV-power can be smaller than in temporary use curing an already exploded algae or bacteria problem. Low power UV sterilizer will eliminate the floating material as well as a more powerful unit as long as a water volume is within the capacity limit, but it can take significantly longer time.
